What is your sex registered at birth?

This service is for uncomplicated cystitis in women. A urine infection in men is assessed differently, so the prescriber will review.

How old are you?
Are you pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive?

Some UTI antibiotics need to be chosen carefully in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the prescriber will review.

Do you have one or more of these: burning or stinging when you pass urine, needing to go more often or more urgently, or cloudy urine?
How long have you had these symptoms?
Do you have any of these right now?

These can suggest a more serious or different infection that needs a different kind of care.

How many urine infections have you had in the last 12 months?
Have you taken antibiotics for a UTI in the last 4 weeks, or are your current symptoms not improving despite treatment?

If a recent course hasn't worked, a urine sample may be needed to choose the right antibiotic.

Are you allergic to, or have you ever reacted badly to, nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim, or any other antibiotic?
Have you ever been diagnosed with any of the following?
Are you currently taking any medicines (prescription or over-the-counter), supplements, or recreational drugs?
Are you taking any of these?
If suitable, which treatment would you prefer?

The prescriber confirms which antibiotic is right for you.

You understand that if your symptoms get worse, you develop a fever or back/side pain, you start being sick, or you don't improve within about 48 hours of starting treatment, you should seek medical help promptly. Do you understand?
You understand you should take the full course of antibiotics exactly as directed, even if you start to feel better. Do you understand?
You understand antibiotics are only appropriate for a genuine infection, and that taking them when they aren't needed contributes to antibiotic resistance. Do you understand?
