Oral finasteride is licensed for men only. If you are female, the prescriber will review which options are appropriate for you.

Are you currently experiencing hair loss or thinning?
How would you best describe your hair loss?
Could your hair loss be linked to a recent illness, major stress, weight loss, a new diet, or a medication?
Is your scalp healthy — free from inflammation, redness, soreness, broken skin, or dressings?
Is your hair loss limited to the temples / front hairline only (rather than the crown)?

Finasteride tends to work best on the crown; results at the temples are more limited.

Are you allergic or sensitive to finasteride, minoxidil, or to ingredients such as alcohol (ethanol), propylene glycol or lactose?
Have you ever experienced depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or another mental-health condition?
Have you ever been diagnosed with any of the following?
Are you currently taking any medicines (prescription or over-the-counter), supplements, or recreational drugs?
Are you using or taking any of these?
Are you starting hair-loss treatment for the first time, or continuing treatment you're already using?

Since starting, have you had any sexual side effects (reduced sex drive, erectile difficulties, or ejaculation problems)?
Since starting, have you had any low mood, depression, or distressing thoughts?
Sexual or mood side effects can, rarely, continue after stopping. Knowing this, are you happy to carry on with treatment?
If your partner is — or could become — pregnant, you understand she must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets, and that you should use a condom during sex. Do you understand?
Finasteride lowers PSA levels, so you understand you must tell your GP you take it before any PSA or prostate blood test. Do you understand?
If you or your partner are planning to conceive, you understand it's recommended to pause finasteride beforehand. Do you understand?
You understand you should seek medical advice promptly if you notice any breast changes — a lump, pain, or nipple discharge. Do you understand?
You understand finasteride can affect mood and has been linked to depression and suicidal thoughts, and that if this happens you should stop and contact a doctor urgently. Do you understand?
You understand finasteride can reduce sex drive and cause erectile difficulties, which in rare cases may persist after stopping. Do you understand?
