What is Pantoprazole?

Pantoprazole is another proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works similarly to other PPIs like omeprazole (Losec) and lansoprazole. It's used to reduce stomach acid and treat various conditions related to excess stomach acid production.

Long-term use of pantoprazole (and other PPIs) can sometimes cause nutrient deficiencies (like magnesium, calcium, and vitamin B12) or increase the risk of certain infections, so it’s important to use it under medical supervision. Pantoprazole is often a good option for people who need consistent acid suppression but should be used with caution for long periods.

The usual dose for acid reflux is Pantoprazole 20 mg orally once a day. Depending on the severity and length of your symptoms, your doctor may advise you to take 40 mg orally once a day. It is usually a short term treatment for 4 - 8 weeks when symptoms flare up.

Some common side effects of Pantoprazole include stomach pain, diarrhoea or constipation, nausea or vomiting, and headaches. Another common side effect is benign polyps in the stomach.
