What is Finacea?
Finacea (Azelaic Acid) gel is an anti-acne preparation gel and is generally used on mild to moderate acne. Azelaic Acid gel can reduce the redness and inflammation caused by acne.
How is Azelaic Acid gel applied?
Apply 2.5cm (0.5g) of the gel to the face twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening). Make sure you clean the skin thoroughly with a mild cleanser prior to applying the gel and wash your hands straight after use.
How does Azelaic Acid gel work?
Like a lot of acne treatments, Azelaic Acid gel (widely known as the branded product Finacea) works to break down blockages in the pores that cause acne. It works as a chemical exfoliator and aims to remove blockages that have already formed in the pores. In addition to this exfoliating quality, the bacteria that cause acne, P.acnes is killed by Azelaic Acid gel. This bacteria is what often causes inflammation and a build up of pus, so by killing this, the appearance of acne can be reduced.
Is Azelaic Acid gel effective?
It may take up to 4 weeks for you to see if the Azelaic Acid gel is working to clear your acne. Azelaic Acid gel is a good treatment option for those with more sensitive skin or whose skin will not withstand harsh acne treatments.
Will Azelaic Acid gel interact with other medication?
It is best to avoid using other topical medications on the affected area at the same time as Azelaic Acid gel. You should make your clinician aware of any other medicines you are taking, particularly those for other skin conditions.
Alternative treatments for acne
There are a variety of other acne treatments that can be taken, including a range of other acne creams, as well as combination packages of oral antibiotics and gels or creams.
Application: Finacea Gel is typically applied to the affected areas once or twice a day, after cleansing your skin. A thin layer is applied to the face, focusing on areas with rosacea or acne lesions.
Consistency: For best results, use the gel consistently, as it may take 2 to 4 weeks to see improvements, with full results often taking 4 to 6 weeks or longer.
Side effects
Azelaic Acid gel is generally much gentler on the skin than other acne treatments, however some people may still experience side effects. The most common side effects are itching, burning and pain to the application site, or some patients may experience a rash, feelings of tingling, dry skin and numbness to the affected area. In a very small number of cases patients may experience a more adverse skin reaction.
