What is Regaine Foam for Men?
Regaine Foam is a topical treatment for hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness). Its active ingredient, minoxidil 5%, is thought to work by increasing blood and nutrient supply to the hair follicles — helping to prolong the growth phase, thicken the hair shaft, and encourage regrowth. It works best when started early, while hair loss is still gradual.
It can be used alongside oral treatments such as finasteride, which work in a different way, though the combination isn’t suitable for everyone. A prescriber will confirm what’s right for you.
How it works
Minoxidil revitalises shrinking hair follicles rather than creating new ones, so it’s most effective on thinning areas rather than fully bald scalp. In the first few weeks it nudges follicles into a new growth cycle, which can briefly increase shedding as older hairs make way for new ones — this is expected and settles.
How to use it
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Prepare | Make sure your scalp and hair are fully dry; a damp scalp dilutes the foam. |
| Cool hands | Rinse hands in cold water first so the foam doesn't melt on contact. |
| Dose | Half a capful (about 1g), twice a day. More won't improve results. |
| Apply & massage | Spread over the thinning area and gently massage into the scalp. |
| Finish | Wash and dry hands. Let hair dry 15–20 minutes; avoid washing hair for ~4 hours. |
Increased shedding in the first 2–6 weeks is normal as follicles reset. [REVIEW: confirm directions against the current PIL.]

Side effects
As with any medicine, some people get side effects. The most commonly reported with the foam is headache. Others can include scalp itching or mild irritation, and unwanted hair growth elsewhere — usually from foam transferring on unwashed hands, so wash them after each application.
Stop and seek advice if you notice a rash, significant scalp irritation, dizziness, a fast or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, swelling of the hands or feet, or unexpected weight gain. If you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, seek urgent help.

Frequently asked questions
Regrowth may begin from around 8 weeks, but it can take up to 16 weeks to see a visible difference. Starting early, while loss is still gradual, tends to give the best results.
A temporary increase in shedding in the first 2–6 weeks is normal — older hairs fall out as follicles move into a new growth phase. It settles as treatment continues.
Minoxidil and finasteride work differently and can often be used together, though the combination isn’t right for everyone. A prescriber will advise.
The benefit depends on continued use — if you stop, hair loss usually resumes over the following months.
Both contain 5% minoxidil and have the same clinical effect; they differ in feel and application. The foam is licensed for men 18–49, the solution for 18–65.
