WEIGHT LOSS GUIDE
Women's health on weight-loss treatment
Contraception, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other considerations while taking GLP-1 treatment.
Contraception
This is an important safety point. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills work, particularly when you start treatment or increase your dose. If you take the combined pill, you may be advised to add a barrier method (such as condoms) for a period of time, or switch to a non-oral method. Speak to your prescriber before starting so your contraception is covered.
Sickness and diarrhoea (common early side effects) can also reduce how well the pill works. If you vomit within a few hours of taking your pill, or have diarrhoea for more than 24 hours, follow the missed-pill advice in your contraception leaflet.
Pregnancy and trying to conceive
GLP-1 weight-loss treatments are not suitable in pregnancy. If you’re planning a pregnancy, you’ll usually be advised to stop treatment a set time beforehand — for the Wegovy tablet, at least two months before. If you think you may be pregnant, stop and speak to your prescriber.
Breastfeeding
These treatments are not recommended while breastfeeding. If you’re breastfeeding or planning to, discuss alternatives with your prescriber.
